“The Amazon River Dolphin Reserve is a new project that Naturaleza y Cultura Ecuador (NCE) propose to establish and develop over 800,000 Ha of new Provincial Protected Areas with World Land Trust’s support between 2024 – 2027 through the expansion of the Amazonian Platform (AP) through the integration of the Orellana Province.”

Reserve:
Orellana Provincial Conservation Area

We have saved:
19,084 acres

Total reserve size:
482,700 acres

Biodiversity:
The Ecuadorian Amazon is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems globally, with 25 different ecosystems, 14 of which are unique to Orellana’s Amazon. It’s home to 700 bird species, including the Military Macaw (Ara militaris, VU and EN in Ecuador) and White-necked Parakeet (Pyrrhura albipectus, VU), 174 amphibian species, including the Pastaza Marsupial Frog (Gastrotheca longipes, EN), and 206 mammal species that rely on native forests, including the Amazon River dolphin (Inia geoffrensis, EN and CR in Ecuador) Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis, EN and CR in Ecuador) and the Lowland Tapir (Tapirus terrestris, VU and EN in Ecuador). The Indigenous Nationalities have cultivated traditional agrobiodiversity over thousands of years, which is crucial for their harmonious relationship with the environment.

Habitat type:
Amazonian Bamboo and Low Montane Evergreen forests, Flooded Forests and Grasslands, Amazon Alluvial floodplains, and water ecosystems.

Elevation:
Ranges from 167 to 410 meters a.s.l.

Location:
It is located between the upper Amazon (condensation zone) and the great Amazon plain, crossing a diversity of ecosystems. The biome is made of Tropical and Subtropical Moist Broadleaf Forests. The goal is to continue expanding the Amazonian Platform towards the regions of Napo and Orellana, thereby safeguarding an additional 2.1+ million hectares of carbon-rich rainforest through a sub-national approach to forest conservation.
