A focus not on planting trees where forests once stood, but on protecting standing forests from deforestation and degradation. Forests that would otherwise be releasing stored carbon as CO2 into the atmosphere.
In 2021 scientists validated our thoughts, identifying the No.1 golden rule of tree planting is to protect standing forests first. Read the report here
Deforestation and forest degradation are the 2nd leading cause of global warming (and the leading cause in some coffee producing countries e.g. Brazil and Indonesia), responsible for about 15-20% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
REDD refers to an approach to mitigate climate change, defined as “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation“.
REDD+ expands the scope of activities to include forest restoration and sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. Naturally this also benefits biodiversity, conservation and communities.

Our only project to combine saving the rainforest with carbon balanced offsetting is the Puro Coffee Rainforest Reserve in Vietnam.
