This reserve looks to protect the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla, whose scientific name is Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla, so special in nature they needed to say it three times.
Acres Saved
“Puro’s support to Environment and Rural Development Foundation between 2023 to 2026 will assist in the creation of Technical Operational Unit (TOU) with an aim to carry conservation and sustainable development actions covering 630,000 ha within the Deng Deng-Dja Biosphere Reserve Corridor as well as fund the establishment of the Sakoudi Community Forest of 1,591 ha.”
Organisation:
Environment and Rural Development Foundation (ERuDeF)
Reserve:
Deng Deng-Dja Biosphere Reserve Corridor
We have saved:
21,029 acres
Total reserve size:
189,260 acres
Biodiversity:
The Deng Deng – Dja conservation corridor is a home to at least 40 species of large mammals including more than 1000 Western Lowland Gorilla, Gorilla gorilla gorilla (CR); 600 Central Chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes troglodytes (EN) as well as African Forest Elephants, Loxondonta africana cyclotis (VU); Giant Pangolin, Smutsia gigantea (EN); White-bellied Pangolin, Phataginus tricuspis (EN); Mandrill, Mandrillus sphinx (VU); Leopard, Panthera pardus (VU); Sitatunga, Tragelaphus spekii (NT); Bongo, Tragelaphus eurycerus (NT); Forest Buffalo, Syncerus caffer (NT); and Bay Duiker, Cephalophus dorsalis (NT).
The area is also a habitat to three key birds’ species i.e., the African grey parrots, Psittacus erithacus (EN); Bates’s Weaver Ploceus batesi (EN) and Grey-necked rockfowls. 60 species of fish belonging to 16 families and mostly Mormyridae and the Cyprinidae are common in the rivers of the region.
Some of the important economic plant resources present in the corridor include Entandophragma cylindricum, Terminalia superba, Entandophragma utile, Erythrophleum suaveolens, Eribroma oblonga, Guarea cedrata, Pterocarpus soyauxii, Xylopia aethiopica, and Enantia chlorantha. The forest flora is dominated by commercially valuable Triplochiton scleroxylon, which are heavily targeted for exploitation throughout their range in the East Region.
Habitat type:
The area consists of lowland rainforests, humid wooded and grassland savanna ecosystems.
Elevation:
Deng Deng National Park – approximately 739m a.s.l
Location:
The corridor falls within key remaining areas of rainforest in West Africa. The Deng Deng-Dja Biosphere Reserve Corridor is ideally located to ensure connectivity between the populations of Western Lowland Gorilla in Deng Deng and Dja, establishing the connectivity to a major biodiversity hotspot in the Congo Basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.
Saving the Rainforest
We have been buying and protecting rainforest in partnership with World Land Trust, since 2005. Take a look at all the Puro Rainforest Reserves we have created together so far.
